Probably nowhere else in the automotive world will you find such a close, fruitful and successful cooperation as for more than fifty years between BMW and Alpina . Most recently, the magicians from Buchloe embarked on the facelifted 7 series or the new X3 and X4 suv.

Alpina’s story began in 1962

Alpina’s story began in 1962, when Burkard Bovensiepen built a double carburetor for the 1500, increasing the car’s performance. Today, more than half a century later, the company already has its own VIN codes and delivers its parts directly to the BMW lines, where the Alpines are created alongside conventional models. In Buchloe, only the final assembly or individualization of the interior takes place, the annual production is around 1,500 cars.

So much for a historical introduction, perhaps with film potential, but the present is even more interesting! Especially when the keys to the latest Alpina models are on the table in front of you, with which you can set off on Austrian roads or torment them right away at the Salzburgring.

Alpina’s philosophy

Alpina’s philosophy is to make cars that can handle everything. In the vast majority of cases, these are fast movements on motorways, but great emphasis is also placed on comfort or cornering behavior (the front axle typically has more pronounced deflections than in conventional BMWs). Thus, classic “non-runflat” tires are used, which work well on 20 ″ discs with well-tuned shock absorbers.

From time to time, however, cars can also visit the racing circuit or the owner can drive to a popular district, which is why a holistic approach to car modification is very important. Sure, starting with high-quality BMW models is one thing, but as soon as the car’s performance is significantly affected (and that’s a matter of course with Alpina), it starts to fly: From stiffer chassis parts and additional struts to shock absorber modifications, high-performance brake system, more powerful coolers,exhaust system up to engine software and automatic transmissions or more durable pistons.

Such an approach is, of course, more expensive than just chip tuning, but unlike it, you can be sure that all parts will last (BMW’s warranty dedication requires extensive testing) and that the car really works on the road. I’ve been to a number of events where cars get their ears on the circuit from sometimes insensitive journalists, but I haven’t noticed any problems with either Alpina.

Especially with strong hot hatches, reports of overheating this or that (plus withered brakes) after three sharp laps are no exception. In short, this is a comprehensive rebirth of the car to a higher level: both in terms of exclusivity and quality. However, the people from Alpina clearly say: We do not compete for cars from the M stable, they are clearly more focused.

BMW

Alpina is an experienced and flexible hole hunter in a portfolio that would not be worth healing to a large company like BMW. A beautiful example is the new Alpina B7 , ie an extended seven with an eight-cylinder with an output of 608 horsepower, aimed mainly at the market in the USA. The edit list is long. I will mention, for example, the modified and reinforced rear axle, the braking system with discs of 395 mm at the front and 398 mm at the rear, redesigned cooling, sharper steering or different damping characteristics and Sport + mode.

With the facelift, a digital, of course typically blue instrument panel has moved into the luxurious interior, the ride itself remains at the very top of what can be expected from a 3.2m wheelbase. It is very smooth and pleasant, but at the same time the car keeps track for a long time (all-wheel drive with a preference for the rear axle helps here) and does not rush out over the front wheels.

Of course, he can’t handle rapid changes of direction as hard as, for example, the B4 S, which was introduced in the farewell edition 99 (the new gen. Then it releases its 800 Nm, which it reaches at 2000 / min, and the digital hand flies upwards. The B7 is a champion in speed distortion: 240 km / h seems to the driver to be a pleasantly relaxed pace.

The presumed besteller

The presumed besteller is a pair of diesel SUVs, based on the X3 . The three-liter (388 hp and 770 Nm) has up to approximately 4,500 / min more power and torque than the six-cylinder petrol engine from the X3 M, so it is devilishly fast during normal driving. The solid chassis, reduced by 15 mm, has up to the “Emkov” grip on specially baked 20 ″ or 22 ″ Pirells. The active rear differential helps a lot here, and even on giant forged twenty-two cars, the car is above average comfortable. The world’s fastest diesel SUVs in their class can rely on traditionally excellent, precisely metered brakes. And all this with a real consumption of less than eight liters.

I can’t forget about perhaps the best example of Alpina’s ingenuity: the B5 Touring, a modified 5 Series. so by the way the fastest station wagon in the world and I would bet my shoes that in Brno, for example, the difference between it and the M5 would not be big. It is therefore a competitor for RS6 or AMG E, for example, but it clearly wins with everyday usability. After all, this is the common denominator for all the well-known models from Alpina.
